Welcome to Vo. 2 of “What I’m Currently Watching”. If you read the first post, you’ll know I am a super passive TV watcher and I never pay attention to whatever is on. As I write this now, I am occasionally glimpsing at “Finding Dory” on my TV. But lately I’ve found a bunch of shows that I LOVE! And trust me, if these shows have gotten my attention, they are worth you taking the time to watch them.
Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: This is the best show I have seen in a while. Midge is a 1950s housewife learns she has a natural knack for stand-up comedy. In a time when women aren’t thought to be funny or independent from their husbands, Midge is such a hilarious fireball who fights for what she wants. I think in another life I could have been a stand up comedian, just because I like telling stories and a good punch line, which may be why I adore this show so much. Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is so funny, quirky, charming and also super empowering. Everything from the quick dialogue and colorful outfits, I can’t recommend this show enough. I watched it on Amazon Prime.
The Act: So since I saw the trailer on Youtube the other day and that is what got me curious about the true story. Since then, I’ve looked up the whole story this show is based off of and WOW! Warning: if you look up the true story this show is based off of, it will spoil it for you. This show is based of the true events of Dee Dee and Gypsy Blancharde. I’ve only seen two episodes so far but Hulu has done a great job of adding little details and jaw dropping moments. I can’t wait to see the rest of the season and how they portray the rest of the story. Joey King and Patricia Arquette are so talented. It’s airing on Hulu now!
Cable Girls: We’ve already been over how much I love the 1920s, so its no surprise I love this show. The interesting part about Cable Girls is that it is in Spanish. I follow along with the subtitles and an English voice over that does not match the moving mouths of the actors. This makes me have to pay attention to the show… which we all know I need. The series tells the turn in life that four young women take when they start working for this telecommunications company in 1928. The show focuses on the hardships working women faced in the 1920s. Theres a lot of drama and secrets and I just love how it takes place in the Roaring 20s in Madrid. You can watch it on Netflix!
A Million Little Things: I made two of my best friends watch it with me and now we’re all hooked. The premise of the story is that a tight-knit circle of friends is shocked after a member of the group dies from suicide unexpectedly. Each friend realizes that they need to finally start living life as they cope with their loss. Along the way you start to learn that everyone is harboring some dark secrets and surprising news. The whole time you want to know why and all these twists and turns keep popping up. I can’t wait for the next season. Its on ABC but I was able to watch it on Hulu.
Shrill: I AM SO MAD IT WAS ONLY 5 EPISODES! Aidy Bryant is absolutely amazing and I would die for her. I didn’t originally know this but its based on the 2016 nonfiction book of essays “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman” by Lindy West. The super short series follows the professional and personal trajectory of a fat woman in her 20s living in Portland, who gradually begins to come into her own. This show brings up so many important issues and is so heartwarming and relatable. No matter what size you are or how you feel about your body, you need to watch this show. It’s on Hulu!
