So something I’ve been really passionate about lately is sustainability and trying to reduce the waste I contribute to the world. One of the first ways I thought of doing so is by not buying traditional shampoo and conditioner bottles. It just seems super wasteful and unnecessary to me to continuously buy bottles, use them for a few weeks and then toss them away. So I did a little research a few months back about shampoo bars! I was skeptical at first but they have really grown on me and I think you should give it a try!
So the first thing you should know is how to use them. Wet your hair first (duh). When you’re in the shower you lather it in your hands. I know some people will rub the bar directly on their head but I usually just lather my hands. It transfers over well and you end up with a lot on your hair! Here’s an article on how to use a shampoo bar!
I originally bought Ethique’s Anti-Frizz bar that smells like vanilla! Only problem was that my hair is already pretty oily so it wasn’t the best choice for my hair. It lathered up super well, and I felt like I was using the same amount as if I were to use a bottle. But I went to Lush a few weeks later because my friend told me that they will give you small samples of shampoo bars to try out. I really like Seanik and Jumping Juniper. The yellow bar in these photos is Godiva.
Okay so let’s talk more about the conditioner bar because I honestly didn’t love it at first. It does not lather as much as the shampoo bar so it’s hard to feel like you’re actually using enough in your hair. When I bought this particular conditioner bar from LUSH, the sales associate told me that when I use the bar to get it wet right when I get in the shower because that will help to soften it by the time you’re done shampooing. I’m still working on this technique. I may go back to Lush and a cream conditioner but probably won’t anytime soon.
So all in all, here are a few reasons you should consider using a shampoo/conditioner bar:
- More environmentally friendly! (duhh) Let’s love Mother Earth y’all
- Easier to travel with (can go in a carry-on on a plane because it’s not a liquid)
- Can last up to 80 washes (and its a pretty small bar!)
- They smell really good and not always like traditional shampoo
- More natural ingredients than typical shampoo
