It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus
This is definitely something I can cross off my bucket list. I am such a big fan of Halloween, and I have always wanted to go to Salem, MA in October. So when I found cheap tickets to Boston in October, I immediately texted Kalen and said ‘are you in?’. She was! So here are so pictures of our day in Salem and what we did!
We decided to take the Boston Ferry one way just to experience the scenic route to Salem. It was $25 each and we almost missed it because we couldn’t find the right port, but we made it just in time (we were the last people on). It was so worth it! It was less than an hour there and a great way to check out the Boston Harbor and Salem Harbor.
After we docked, we walked around the streets of Salem and it is such a cute little town and so many people decorate for Halloween!
We found this Crepe place downtown for a pit stop before we really continued on with our day (and they were delicious!)
It was on my list to see the Bewitched statue while we were here! Good thing it’s right in the middle of downtown.
There was a giant street fair happening in Salem during the weekend we were there with a ton of artwork, Salem t-shirts and of course witch hats
One of the first things we did was check out the Witch House. It’s the only structure still standing that actually had anything to do with the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. It was the home of Judge Jonathan Corwin.
The house was turned into a whole museum that goes into more about the witch trials. I learned a lot more about the hysteria and how it got started so it was definitely worth the cost to get in ($9).
There is this rooftop bar on the top of the Hotel Salem which had a really cool vibe and really good Autumn Mules. This is also where Kalen and I changed outfits.
We made a stop at the actual Salem Massacre Memorial to pay some respects to those who lost their lives during the hysteria.
We also visited the Peabody Essex Museum. There were a lot of interesting exhibits and an outside terrace that was great to take some photos. Portions of some exhibits also helped Kalen with her thesis paper she’s writing for grad school.
We took some pictures in the Salem Commons after the museum and I have to admit I edited these a ton!!!!! But look how spooky they look! (More pics of this outfit are in this blog). I used a preset on Lightroom and then the PicsArt app.
Another spot I definitely wanted to visit while here was the Ropes Mansion which was used in Hocus Pocus. We didn’t go in because it was already closed but it was fun taking pictures outside.
They had this beautiful garden behind the house too!
We went to the Village Tavern for dinner, which was hoppin’ at the time. I got the Shipwreck Pumpkin Ale again (I definitely think it’s my favorite pumpkin drink this season).
I also tried a Beyond Burger for the first time! I wasn’t the biggest fan to be honest because it reminded me too much of eating a raw patty (even though it wasn’t) so maybe I was playing some mind games with myself. I’m definitely willing to try it again!
After dinner we took the train from Salem back to Boston which was also pretty cheap (around $8 I think). But its weird because apparently our train hit a deer coming back and we were delayed for a quite a bit.
When we got back to our Airbnb we watched Hocus Pocus because we felt that was super fitting and a great way to end a spooky trip to Salem. It was such a fun day and we saw so much of the town. I would definitely recommend visiting Salem in October at least once in your life!
