A personal goal I’ve had for years is to read more books. I absolutely love reading but I definitely don’t make it a priority. But as you can see from the pile of books in the picture above, I really need to get my act together and start reading more. Thankfully, there are a few new factors in my life that will push me towards my goal and I’ve listed then (as well as my current reading list) below.
My Issues With Reading:
I have this problem where reading is always my very last priority. When I have downtime, I normally blog, take pictures for blogging, go on Pinterest, scroll on apps in my phone, watch Netflix, nap, etc. Most of these are my methods of being productive, but I hate that I never consider reading to be productive. When I finish a book I feel so accomplished… but I always have horrible book hangovers that keep my mind spiraling for days, even weeks after I finish. That’s probably why I tend to reread books because I already know what the ending is so I won’t build up any anxiety or questions while reading. But rereading books definitely doesn’t help me reach my book goals this year. So regardless of all of that, I have made it a goal to read for at least 30 minutes a day before bed (of a book I haven’t read before). Here are some other things that will help my reading goals this year.
- I downloaded GoodReads: Something that I’ve really strived to keep active with my goals is numbers. It’s way easier for me to know whether I have crushed a goal or not, but giving myself a deadline and a set number. So by the end of 2020, my goal is to read 26 books. I also want to expand my community in the app too to see what other people are reading.
- Bad on Paper Podcast: I love listening to Grace and Becca talk about their love of books. And all the books they pick for their book club sound amazing. I would love to actually read along with one of their monthly book club picks at least once this year (That also goes for Reese’s Book Club and Read It Forward’s Book Club).
- Speaking of book clubs…: I’m currently in a book club with a bunch of my closest friends and I’m hoping that will keep me accountable with keeping up with reading different books than I normally would. The first pick for this month is The Flight Attendant but tbh…I haven’t even started it.
- Downloading Audiobooks: I’m a big podcast person so I’m hoping that if I download a few audiobooks this year, I’ll be able to get through my list of books quicker. I’ve never listened to one before, but there’s no better time to try than now. Also #sustainability.
- I found my library card: Fun fact: I’ve had this library card since I was in 1st grade. My mom signed for it because I was 8. But trust me, it’s the same exact card. And I probably haven’t been to the library in…5 years (because you know…college and what not). But the other day I went to check out a Whole30 cookbook and I have rediscovered the joys of renting books and giving them back. It’s so much cheaper! Not to mention, the tight deadline for when you have to finish a book should keep me accountable too. GOD BLESS LIBRARIES.
Here are just some of the books I’d like to read this year (most of which I already have at home):

Nonfiction:
- It’s What I Do
- I Feel Bad About My Neck
- Becoming
- Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead
- It’s Not You
