Words cannot describe how excited I am to FINALLY share this Taylor Swift AMAs recreation. I have been sitting on this idea for MONTHS! Taylor wore this gorgeous Julien Macdonald dress to the 2019 American Music Awards back in November. The moment I laid eyes on it, I was thinking “OMG…I could totally recreate that”. Definitely took a while to implement but here we are. After all, the color green is big in March, so I like to think that even though I’m late on delivery I’m still on brand. More pictures, how I made this dress and the story on where I shot these pictures are all below!
So for those of you who don’t know what dress I’m talking about, here is a picture of Taylor at the 2019 AMAs:
just now realized I put the opening of this dress on the wrong side, but anyway…
How I Made This Dress:
Fun fact: I am not a sewing person! I actually do not have any skill or extensive knowledge on how to sew. This dress is being held together by safety pins around the waist. I pinned it all together the morning of this shoot. It took probably 4 tries to make it look how I wanted. Probably would have been easier to sew, but alas, it worked for its purpose. I was worried I was going to trip on the flowy fabric and rip the whole thing. But I also trimmed the hem so it wasn’t dragging when I had heels on.
This short green sequin dress is from Lulu’s 2 years ago (here’s the post where I originally wore the dress). I definitely ordered too much additional green, sequin fabric (like half a yard too much). But that made it easier to create the draping over-the-shoulder look. Plus, you can only order full yards on Etsy. So if I had gotten just 1 yard, I definitely wouldn’t have had enough. The colors were a little off between the original dress and new fabric, but I think they compliment each other nicely.
Other Details:
I found these earrings on Etsy. They were a little smaller than I had expected, but I’ve already worn them again since taking these photos. So worth it. I already had the over the knee boots, which made this recreation pretty inexpensive compared to others (see this post).
- Dress: Already had, but I think it was $45 at Lulu’s (similar)
- Boots: Already had, but I think they were $30 at Target (similar)
- Extra Fabric: $29.66 on Etsy
- Earrings: $11.12 on Etsy
These pictures were shot in the Walter’s Museum in Baltimore. This was also the location for me ME! photoshoot back in May. Definitely one of my favorite shooting locations, especially for Taylor Swift recreations.
One of the museum supervisors asked if we had been to the other building when we were taking these pictures. I didn’t even know there was another building at the Walters, but I was so happy she showed us! She escorted us there and moved a bunch of velvet ropes so I could get these pictures on the staircase. Total Cinderella moment for me.
And now for some personality pics:
Shoutout to Kayla for helping me bring this vision to life. We had a super fun shooting day in Baltimore (we also went to the graffiti alley that day). I even changed into this dress in my car outside the Graffiti Alley, which was a little challenging but we did it! Once again, if you haven’t checked out Kayla’s amazing photography, click here.
