Think about the place where you first MET me…
So I decided to do the Met Gala challenge! I’m pretty proud of myself for even trying to recreate something for the challenge and we all have to admit that this tinfoil mess does kind of resemble the original Louis Vuitton masterpiece (see below). I honestly just keep laughing to myself whenever I look at the side-by-side, but you get the point right? Regardless of how ‘accurate’ this dress is, I had fun making it and I’m happy I only used what I already had in the house to do it. If you’ve been on my blog before, you already know I really enjoy recreating famous photos and outfits. I got so excited when I saw Vogue and Billy Porter started a #metgalachallenge in place of the Gala that was supposed to happen this Monday. And course I had to participate with a Taylor Swift look.
I remember so many people hated this look in 2016. I think I was so blown away by Bleachella at the time that I thought this look was such a 180 from her usual Taylor style. Which is good for the Met Gala! I look at this outfit now and I just think of how infamous and notorious it is.
I truly love all of Taylor’s Met Gala looks but I think this is definitely her most iconic. This was also the last time she attended the Gala, the night she met Joe Alwyn (see the lyrics for ‘Dress‘) and the night that inspired ‘Getaway Car’ on reputation. WHAT I WOULD GIVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED THAT NIGHT! But I won’t get into that now. I feel like making this dress was the clear option for me for the #metgalachallenge. I also knew I was crunched for time since the challenge ends on May 3rd. I knew I could only recreate a Met Gala look with that I had in the house. And thank goodness we had a lot of aluminum foil and electrical tape.
I literally read about this challenge on Twitter yesterday at like 5pm and started working on the dress that night. I shot these pictures this morning at 10am, so this is definitely the quickest turn around for a #Kimberkopy idea I’ve ever had.
For this dress, I tapped tinfoil and electrical top onto a skirt and high neck crop top. I also used wardrobe tape to get the foil to stick to the fabric. I thought I would use silver tissue paper too, but it looked too different compared to the foil. And of course, the tinfoil kept ripping and I could barely move or walk in this outfit. In fact, the laces on my legs kept falling and I had to ask my mom to help me push them back up. I was such a mess in this dress today. My mom helped me a ton with taping me into all this tinfoil so big shoutout and thank you to her!
For the rest of the look, I did pretty basic eye make-up (no crazy wings or anything) and dark lipstick. Unfortunately I have pretty long, dark blonde hair which does not work for Bleachella! So I just pulled it into a low, messy bun and threw some white powder on top to make it a little blonder.
At first when I was looking at these side by sides, I was embarrassed because the dress didn’t turn out how I wanted. But at the end of the day, I know I’m not a designer or seamstress. I had a lot of fun making this with my mom and I love doing anything that is related to Taylor Swift. And that’s really what matters. This was a really fun challenge and I hope one day I can actually recreate this gorgeous dress more accurately one day.
At the end of the day, if you can’t confidently rock the knock-off Louis Vuitton dress you made from tinfoil and electrical tape….you just don’t have it kid.
The #metgalachallenge is still going on until May 3rd! Comment below if you recreated a Met Gala look, I would love to see it!
Thanks for reading! xx
