One of my favorite things I did in 2023 was track every outfit I wore in a Google Sheets Spreadsheet. I was inspired by people on Tiktok to do so, in order for me to really get a gage on what I regularly wear. I wanted to share my most worn items from 2023 and share what I learned about myself and my closet during this process.
In 2023, I used Google Sheets to track everything I wore each day. I got this idea from a TikTok creator in 2022 (@beccabren) but my motives were slightly different than hers. Becca had included everything in her closet and was able to use a drop down box to tally everything. I do not have the time or motivation to do that (shoutout to her for going through her entire closet), so I just wrote in what I was wearing each day. Becca also shared how much she had paid for each item, but I also chose not to do it this way because there is no way I would remember how much I paid for every item of clothing I own. Maybe one day! So while my approach and methods are very different than the creator I got this idea from, I still wanted to give her credit.
I wanted to do this spreadsheet to help me pull some data on my closet and dressing trends. I know I truly have so many clothes that I genuinely just do not wear anymore. I’ve gone through my closet so many times and yet, here I am, gravitating towards wearing the same things week after week. My hope for this tracking was to help me learn more about my day-to-day style and help me ditch some of the clothes I no longer wear. My next steps after collecting all of this data is to start cleaning out the clothes that didn’t even make the spreadsheet! But jeez that would be a big project. All in all, I am so glad I stuck with it! Not a single day was missed (even if some were guesstimates) which deserves a pat on the back for actually seeing something all the way through. Here are my most worn pieces:
Most Worn Top: Watch Hill Sweatshirt
I always say, “my newest sweatshirt is my favorite sweatshirt” but I actually think this one was worn the most because it is oversized and a neutral color. As someone who works from home and loves changing back into comfy clothes after any function, seeing a sweatshirt be my most worn top is not surprising. However, I do have to admit that I think I wore my UO Taylor Swift “Peace” Sweatshirt the most because I usually wore that to bed. But that is an inside sweatshirt (the girls who get it, get it). It’s a little disappointing to see this is my most worn top. Despite having a fashion blog, I still gear towards comfy and cozy in my every day style choices.
Most Worn Bottoms: Nike Yoga Pants
This is absolutely no surprise to me. I wore these pants almost every week! Sometimes multiple times a week! They are my most versatile item in my closet. I dress them up, dress them down and no matter where I travel, I always pack them. Even during the summer! I actually need to patch a small hole on the right thigh of these before it gets bigger (it’s 2024, we mend clothes before we ditch them and replace them). I also want to mention got these Nike yoga pants from ThredUp in late 2022, so these pants being my most worn bottom for the year is such a win for sustainable Kim.
Most Worn Dress: Gingham Sundress
I also purchased this dress from ThredUp in 2022. In recent years, I have become a big fan of the “casual sundress”. I love throwing on a midi dress and wearing a button down or sweater over it. Makes it so much more versatile! However, I have gotten the ick for some of these dresses, so I am looking to replacing a few when it gets warmer. Since this dress is more summer-y, I am assuming that I just don’t really wear dresses when it’s colder out. Good to know! Honorable mention: I borrowed a few dresses from one of my best friends, Melissa, this year and both of her dresses were the 2nd and 3rd most worn. Goes to show how great borrowing clothes from friends can be!
Most Worn Shoe: Platform Converse
Once again, I am not surprised. I bought these shoes in Spring 2022 and I have never looked back. I also have only had to clean them 3 times! Which is crazy because I used to absolutely destroy low-rise white Converse in college. I don’t care if this style is on it’s way out- these shoes go with everything. And yes, I know I am a tall girl and I don’t need “a platform” but that’s what makes these shoes more fun. I am becoming a big sneaker girl (blame it on my gf) so I am skeptical if these will be my most shoe next year.
What I Learned:
I am so glad I have all of this data. I am proud of myself for recording every day. Now that I can look at all of this data, I can make several conclusions, such as:
- I prefer comfort. Duh. Wearing clothes that hurt or make us feel uncomfortable are so pre-2020.
- WFH changed what I wear. Considering I work from home from home now, there is so much less pressure to actually put together an outfit. Why bother getting dressed or even putting on a bra when you’re just going to be sitting in your house all day? I used to have to dress “business casual” 5 days a week for work, and planning weather appropriate and office appropriate clothing was such a headache. Comfort and professionalism took priority over personal style. But now that I can dress however, I would like to challenge myself to actually get dressed in the morning (in something that is not a sweats).
- Do I have a fear of outfit repeating? I definitely don’t mind wearing an item of clothing two days in a row (as long as it’s clean), but I don’t rewear most of my “fun” or “stylish” items that really make a statement. But clearly the clothes I repeat the most are comfy clothes that no one but my parents will see me in. I want to embrace outfit repeating this year, because clothes are meant to be worn and if an outfit is fire one day, it deserves to be worn again.
Changes to My Tracking Sheet For 2024:
I have already started my new “Outfit Tracking” spreadsheet for 2024. I have already made some changes to how I track, by including more categories. By listing out more specific categories to track (like having “Shorts”, “Pants” and “Skirts” be their own column instead of just “Bottoms”) I can pull more specific information. I also want to be more consistent in what I list each item of clothing as. Example: I must have used “Peace Sweatshirt” and “Orange Peace Sweatshirt” interchangeably for the same sweatshirt so many times. I had to manually go through and change so many so I was pulling accurate data. And finally, I want to start looking at the data per season. Hopefully next year I’ll be able to say what my most worn “summer dress” and “winter dress were. That information could help me figure out what I should actually purchase or pull out for each season. I am very excited to see what my closet wrapped will look like in a year!
Let me know in the comments if you track your outfits. Thanks for reading! xx
