It is so crazy to think that 3 years ago today, I was in the midst of getting my jaw surgery. Literally right now, I was only in hour 4 of a 7 hour surgery. It truly feels like it was yesterday. It was such a pivotal time for me, and I love sharing my experience here on my blog. Over the years, many people have reached out to me to ask questions about the surgery or express gratitude for sharing my story online. And it truly warms my heart! So in honor of my 3 year anniversary, I wanted to make this post of some questions I’ve received lately and share how I’m feeling about everything three years later. I also wanted to include some old Snapchats of my jaw surgery process (because I was hilarious back then).

This time of year is always full of so many anniversaries for me! It’s been a year since I graduated, a year since my cruise (and almost getting taken), a year since I started my first full time job, 2 years since my surgery and now 2 years since I started this blog! (That was a lot of anniversaries…but you get the point…life comes at you fast.) I always like to celebrate my jaw surgery but I realized the other day that I haven’t actually made a post about when I started my blog! My blog and my jaw surgery really go hand in hand because I made “Kimbermoose” when I was in recovery. I was so bored at the time! And I had wanted to start a blog for years, but never had that amount of free time before. So as a fun little way to celebrate 2 years of my blog, here’s the scoop on how I started and the truth behind a lot of my pictures from my first blog posts. Let’s just say for now, pictures can be very misleading to an actual situation.

Hi everyone! This is my first time doing this for the blog but I made a video! Today is the one year anniversary of my double jaw surgery, so to celebrate and reflect back on it, I created this video. During the course of my surgery process, I would take short videos of each step that was happening as it happened, whether it was going to the ortho to get my braces tightened, going to meet with my surgeon, going to the hospital, leaving the hospital, documenting my all liquid diet and more! This video is pretty long but thats because I documented all of this for a over a year. If you’re interested in just getting to the part where I go into surgery, skip to 7:51. I took most of these videos on Snapchat so that is why its vertical (I know better so I’m kicking myself for that). It starts at my first braces appointment and ends on the day I got the braces off. Basically, this is a video of my hair getting longer and my face getting shorter. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry; its the feel good jaw surgery video of the year.
Enjoy!xx
Jaw Surgery FAQ
Anything involving my jaw surgery has pretty much fallen to the back burner these days. Yet when I look at the stats of my blog, I noticed I get the most hits from my jaw surgery posts. Lately, a lot of people have reached out to me with questions about my experience. I genuinely love how random strangers will reach out to me with questions and tell me how much my blog has helped them. So I wanted to create this FAQ post about my surgery, just so people can have a reference or quick guide to my surgery. This does not mean I don’t want people reaching out to me anymore, I just thought this would be more organized and list a bunch of facts I don’t think I’ve ever talked about before. The major posts for my recovery and post-op experiences are here and here. If you ever have anything you want to ask me about my surgery experience, please do! I love talking about it.
New Face, Who Dis?
Fun fact: I love showing people side by side comparisons of my face pre and post op. Everyone’s reactions are always hilarious and they always say something like “You look so good now!…not that you looked bad before…but wow!” Unless you’re my little brother who tells me I was ugly then and am still ugly now. He keeps me humble.
The left picture was taken in December 2015, after my first consultation for the surgery, but before the braces. The second picture was taken in November 2017, the day my braces came off. I’m laughing at the fact that I’m wearing the same J.Crew vest because that was definitely not on purpose.
I wanted to make this post about the recent identity crisis I’ve been having since I had my double jaw surgery. My friends and family will ask me all the time if I get freaked out when I look in the mirror or if I miss the way my face used to look. And the answer is yes…but also no.
6 Month Post-Op Recap/Bye-Bye Braces
So what was supposed to be just a “Bye-Bye Braces” post is now a “6 Month Post-Op Recap” post as well because I just realized that today is exactly the 6 month anniversary of my surgery (I should take myself out to dinner). I thought this would be a good time to post some comparison pictures of myself pre and post operation. What makes this post even better is the fact that I got my braces off 4 days ago (after 14 months their prisoner) and I couldn’t be happier. This entire process started in August of 2015 when I got my first x-rays is now ending over 2 years later. It feels like the braces were the final obstacle I had to get over for my recovery, and now that they are off, this surgery chapter of my life is finally done.
3 Month Recovery for Double Jaw Surgery
This is another blog post for anyone who is curious about what my recovery was like over the summer. I hope anyone who is getting double jaw surgery can read this and know what to expect.
No lie, my recovery was not fun and it was not easy. This post is in no way meant to scare anyone from getting this surgery. I am so happy with my face now, that all the discomfort and pain I felt during recovery was worth it. But this is an honest recap of the recovery process that I had to brace myself for months in advance. My doctors told me what to expect long before I even had a surgery date, but I still wasn’t prepared for a lot of things, like the lack of feeling in my face and the long-term swelling.
I didn’t post any pictures of my face right after my surgery, and when you look at these pictures, you’ll probably understand why. I didn’t really post my face on social media during the summer because the swelling was so bad, so here is a glimpse of what I looked like for the past 3 months. Keep an eye out for a vlog coming soon of the entire braces-surgery-recovery process.
Also, this is a very long post so bear with me: a lot happened, so I have a lot to share.
Brace Yourself
I am actually really excited to write this post. Anyone who has been friends with me for over a year knows that my braces are my biggest insecurity. I dreaded having braces since the moment I found out I had to get them and the self depreciating humor has not ended ever since. This is my second time with braces and today marks the one year anniversary to when I got them on again (wow-time flies). I’m hoping that by writing this post that I can help anyone else who has adult braces feel more confident and show that it’s not the end of the world (even though I like to pretend it is).
Thoughts on Food After an All Liquid Diet
I hope you read my other post about the details of my all liquid diet. I am currently learning how to chew again and chewing is becoming easier with each passing day. I’m even starting to get some feeling back in my face. 6 weeks really flew by, but my surgery also feels like it was a lifetime ago. Being restricted to only liquids for 6 weeks got me thinking about food in a different way. I also realized a lot of things about food and the customs that surround it. Here are a few thoughts I have on food now after experiencing an all-liquid diet:
